CentroGEO is a public research SEP-Conacyt. Its main objective is to carry out scientific research activities, high-level academic programs, technological and innovation from a Geospatial Information Sciences. In September 2014, CentroGEO arrived in Aguascalientes with an initial staff of six researchers and professors, dedicated to scientific research and technological development. Nowadays, CentroGEO offers a variety of academic programs such as master and Ph.D. in Geospatial Information Sciences, Computational Geointelligence, Urban Planning, among others (see https://www.centrogeo.org.mx/posgrados for more information). In Aguascalientes we are looking for offering both the master and doctoral Geospatial Information Sciences program with an emphasis on Intelligent Systems, we are working on it, and we hope this becomes a reality soon.

Also, CentroGEO Aguascalientes is part of the National Laboratory of GeoIntelligence, which is an initiative of CONACYT to facilitate that the capacities of the Public Research Centers, (in this case CIMAT, INFOTEC, CENTROGEO, and IPICYT), are applied to the generation and transfer of knowledge to the public, private and social sectors, through the development of new products and services specialized in Geospatial Information Sciences (CIG) and Geointelligence. Today, CentroGEO is conformed of 10 professors and researchers, specialized in a variety of Computational, Engineering, and Social Sciences areas. Our researchers collaborate with CIDE, CIMAT, and INFOTEC research centers, to do multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research in several fields of knowledge. Our work is concentrated in these particular areas: machine learning and AI applications, remote sensing and agriculture precision, Industry 4.0, and the security of society.

Machine Learning and AI Applications

Here, the work of several of our researchers is focused on the development of machine learning, image processing, and artificial intelligence algorithms and applications. Such is the case of Dr. Guillermo Ruiz due to his research includes the study and design of algorithms for searching on big data collections. Some applications of that are web search engines, pattern recognition, data mining, multimedia collections, speech recognition, among others. He also studies artificial intelligence algorithms using deep learning for automatic object detection on images and videos. Together with Dr. Daniela Moctezuma, Dr. León Dozal, and Dr. Tania Ramírez, are working on a project of video surveillance to describe the content of a video using natural language. That means a human being could describe the content of a movie or any kind of video. For that, the objective of this project is to scan the videos and automatically generate a text report containing the actions present on the recordings to have better control and accelerate decision-making. Also, we are working on improving intelligent algorithms for the classification, detection, and description of objects within a semantic context in images and scenes.

Remote Sensing and Precision Agriculture

Here, some of our researchers are working on the design of algorithms for capturing and processing images acquired remotely, mainly through unmanned aerial vehicles (better known as drones) and from satellite platforms. One of the main applications that are being developed are focused on the analysis plants, if they are still sick or what their condition is. This project comprehends the use of several kinds of sensors such as temperature, humidity, conductivity, along with the usage of thermal and multispectral cameras for monitoring and management of diverse crop production processes. This real time data analysis allows for the early detection of problems such as plagues and plant diseases. Specifically, this project has been developed since 2017 by Dr. Jesús Antonio Sosa Herrera, Dr. Nohemi Álvarez Jarquín, Dr. Daniela López Araujo, and Dr. Néstor Cid García, in CentroGEO-Aguascalientes.

Another research area that is working in CentroGEO Aguascalientes is developed by Dr. León F. Dozal, which consists mainly of Genetic Programming, which is a technique used to emulate computers, the learning capacity that living beings have. Currently, he addresses problems related to Remote Sensing, such as detection of clandestine graves in hyperspectral images and detection of pests in forests using multispectral aerial images obtained also with drones.

Internet of Things and Industry 4.0

This is another research area that we are working on. The main feature of Industry 4.0 is the creation of smart factories capable of more efficient and less prone to failure production. To accomplish the latter multiple technologies are integrated across many production stages. In CentroGEO Aguascalientes, a research team is developing control strategies for autonomous ground vehicle navigation in unknown environments, they also seek to achieve cooperative work to reach a common goal among some (or all) vehicles in the presence of partial communication loss. The projects they are developing make use of data collected remotely by sensors to improve performance or make decisions that affect the future behavior of the system.

Also, as an example of the Internet of Things project, an intelligent system is being developed to monitor pollinators in plants and generate databases that allow knowing the behavior of these beings so crucial in the sustainability of the ecosystem; the above is done in collaboration with colleagues INFOTEC.

Citizen Security

This area of research aims to provide analytic, theoretical, and methodological tools for understanding public security, in order to establish, strengthening, and protecting the democratic civil order and eliminating the threats of violence in the population. Hence, favoring a safe and pacific coexistence. The geography of violence has contributed to strengthening public security from the academic framework.

As you can see, the diversity of CentroGEO Aguascalientes is great, looking for good and optimal solutions from a computational and engineering point of view, but also looking for research solutions on social aspects so important as security.
